Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.
The good news are that I no longer have the problem. While trying to
setup the VPN I found that setkey -DP was giving some strange results so
I recompiled ipsec-tools. Apparently that made the problem to go away.
ipsec-tools had been compiled with a previous version of the ipsec
patch.
Unfortunately I no longe have the other binaries so I can not test it
any further.
