The NIC in question is a D-Link DFE-580TX.

I'm currently using the 2.4.22-pre6 kernel since I saw there had been a few 
updates to the sundance driver. I've also experienced the problem with 2.4.21 
as well. 2.4.21 was the initial kernel I used.

It's a VIA chipset based system, MSI 6380 motherboard (MSI KT3 Ultra2 afair).
