I am currently running a Linux 2.4.18 kernel with the EtherExpress 16 driver "eexpress.c" dated Feb 25 2002. This is the version of the driver that came with the Slackware 8.1 distribution. My server is an old 486 DX2/66MHz Compaq Prosignia with 16MB of RAM and a 16 bit ISA NetFlex NIC. The server also has a 16 bit ISA 3C509 card as well and both of these drivers are compiled into the kernel. During boot time both drivers load properly although I always get the "CU didn't stop" error on the NetFlex card (eth1 interface). After I started getting this message I researched the newsgroups to find out that I was not the only one who had experienced this problem. Some of the older posts mentioned that the driver was flaky and that their cards would stop responding at random intervals. I contacted a number of the people who had posted to the newsgroups to see if their problem had been resolved but found out that most people either chose to live with the problem or switched to a different card. My NIC will function perfectly for a short period but then will go completely dead. The interval is random and the only way to resolve the problem is to reboot the machine. Some times it will work for 1-2 weeks, other times 1-2 hours. I've tried to resolve the problem myself through research and the newsgroups but have been unsuccessful. Is there a workaround to this "CU didn't stop" error or is there an updated version of the driver that fixes this problem? I have tried to contact Philip Blundell but have not yet received a reply. I greatly appreciate your help.
