With the small amount of info. you give it's impossible to say. To find out what's really happening, run tcpdump or ethereal to see what's on the wire. Assuming you're telnetting to 192.0.2.1: tcpdump -n host 192.0.2.1 or ethereal -S -k -i eth0 -n 'host 192.0.2.1' and that will show if a. packets are being sent to the destination b. any packets are being received from it That will guide you in checking out your logs to see the cause of the behavior you're seeing.
