I can see the original printk, ie printk(KERN_INFO "NET4: Linux TCP/IP 1.0 for NET4.0\n");
in messages, so I am guessing, i should be able to see my own printk (which follows the original) also in messages !

I was unable to find the file boot.msg (Redhat Linux)

Wouldn't it show up in boot.msg rather than messages? (SuSE Linux)
I believe there is a seperate file for kernel messages before the syslog
daemon gets going. Have you looked in there for your printk or only in
messages?
