We tried it out to get our first patch (new net_device feature NETIF_F_SHARED_IPV6 ...) in 2.4 kernel but without success. It didn't get accepted because I wanted someone to go through the process of making sure the IPV6 standardization group had no problems with the things you guys are doing.
