Sending packets between interfaces

Hi, folks

We are trying to perform a simple test, intended
to verify that hardware behaves ok:

1. Connect 2 interfaces (eth0 and eth1) on the same host with cross cable
3. Configure interfaces to have different IP addresses
2. Send ping from one interface to another
4. See RX and TX counters incrementing in "ifconfig eth0/eth1"

This worked in kernel 2.0, but in 2.2/2.4 packets go through
loopback interface. Is there any way to send them through
real interfaces ?

Thanks in advane.

Felix.
