MTU Size - "IP always defragment"

Hi!

I've a weird Problem with kernel 2.4.20, and thought, that maybe the

"IP: always defragment" - Kernel Option might solve it. But I can't find
it any more :-( - Has it been replaced?

Anyway ... My Problem might be something totaly different:

Here's my setup:

  [ISP] ... PPTP/ADSL ... [ZyXEL-Router] ... [Linux/GW] ... [Linux/Client]

So there is a ZyXEL-Router which takes care of my Internet Connection.
The Linux/GW takes care of NAT/DNS and such, and the Client that's me :-)

Kernel 2.4.20 (no additional Patches but FreeSWAN and LVM).

I use iptables (as modules) for NAT.

The Problem is when connection to a certain FTP-Site on the Internet the
ADSL connection dies after transfering about 100K Data. The ZyXEL-Router
can still be pinged, but "Internet" is dead. After 30 seconds or so
everything is back to normal. Only one FTP-Site makes this problem ...
any other Site seems to be okay.

1) The Router seems to be okay, because when use a Windows Client ...
everything works fine. Also I replaced the router with a Netgear ADSL-Box
... same problem.

2) It doesn't make any difference if I ftp from the Linux-GW or the
Linux-Client. Both crash the connection

3) I've tried Realtek and Intel Network-Cards on the GW. And an
onboard SiS900 Network-Card on the Client.

Setting MTU 1344 on the gateway with an Intel Card solves the Problem on
the Gateway. The Client can still bring down the connection by starting
an ftp download.

MTU 1344 does not solve the problem when using an Realtek Card on the
Gateway.

On the Client (SiS900) I've to use Size MTU 1334 to solve the Problem (The
gateway can still have MTU 1500!).

BTW ... The ftp-server I'm trying to download from is ftp.berlios.de ...
but till now any other ftp-site seems to work fine.

Any Ideas.

Thanx
  Kianusch
