Hmmm. I once did a patch for epic100.c to support the SMC9432FTX NIC, which 
uses the LXT970 PHY chip. It wasn't accepted for inclusion in the kernel 'til 
now, but you can find it (and some details) on 
http://www.hillier.de/linux/epic100-fiber.php3.

I don't know if the LXT972 is somehow similar to LXT970, but perhaps this will 
help you in some way...
