  The CARD is sold with name  3c509,  the MAC chip is
  some 3COM custom ASIC for which finding the documents
  might be next to impossible.

  My history pile didn't have that card, so I can't
  say if it has separate chip for PHY, possibly not.
  I think it had coaxial and AUI interfaces, which in
  a sense do need separate PHY, the one called "AUI".

  Current Linux driver (for 2.4 series) has this string
