If fact, you don't have to ping from both sides since when you ping a
machine, it is expected that it will answer back else the machine is
down/unreachable.

Now, this might not be a cure it all. I can't be positively sure but I
suspect that entries are periodically flushed from the forwarding table
after behing "idle" for some times, as ARP entries.

So, a periodic ping between the two machines should do, unless there is
a way to "statically" populate the switch forwarding table.
