Thank you Bernd, Problem is I don't know what entries I should add to /etc/hosts. Entries 127.0.0.1 localhost aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd this_host.this.domain are already in /etc/hosts. Where aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is the same as that assigned by rc.inet1 to eth0. The response from "ping this_host.this.domain" is pretty fast. Some programs waiting very long for the response from something I do not know are: telnet, syslogd, XFree86. Each of them take about 10 seconds to connect/complete/start, respectively. One example is "telnet localhost". Repeated message NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out is, I guess, issued by syslogd started by rc.inet1. My notebook PC, with or without pcmcia network card inserted, don't have this problem. What else entries in /etc/hosts am I supposed to enter? Please! Best Regards, CN > > I don't intend to always connect this box to network > > hub. How do I speed things up (by forcing NETDEV > > WATHDOG stop probing?)? > The probing is not your problem. Your problem is, that some programs > actually want to use the network. Most likely things which slow you down are > failed name resolutions. You can put the most used network names in > /etc/hosts or use a caching and offline able proxy dns server like pdnsd. -------------------------------------------------------- You too can have your own email address from Eurosport. http://www.eurosport.com - : send the line "unsubscribe linux-net" in the body of a message to majordomo@vger.kernel.org More majordomo info at http://vger.kernel.org/majordomo-info.html
