Shortly after posting this message I decided to tinker around with some 
settings.  I discovered that setting the MTU on the ethernet cards of both 
linux machines to 1412 eliminated the hangups.  I suspect that the linksys 
router is breaking PMTU discovery and the 1500 MTU was just too much for 
PPPoE.
