I'm sure you've tried
smbmount //work/c /whateverdirectory .
You could also do that with backslashes (\), but if so, it must be double:
smbmount \\\\work\\c \\whateverdirectory .

Your problem might be in your smb.conf file (located in /etc or /etc/samba). Check to make sure 
encrypt passwords = yes
under [global].
