high performance rackmount system

i need to build a high performance system for basic firewalling.

it needs to have two gigE cards (fiber) and i'd like them to sit on
different PCI busses for faster performance.

i think that some linux network drivers can make use of hw checksumming on
the NIC card, but i'm not sure which ones.

does anybody have any experience or input on both a hardware box and NIC
vendor?

you can reply off-list and i'll post a summary.

thanks,
