Taking down an interface while testing

Hello All,
I have a question. It may be stupid, and the act of doing so may be stupid, but when I take down an interface using ifdown <iface> while there is an active tcp connection, all sorts of bad things happen. Nasty errors get printed to the screen, and things don't work correctly after that.
My question is, what exactly happens in the kernel when an interface is taken down using ifdown? I have the drivers loaded as modules.
Again, I know it's stupid, but I am just curious.
