Quick Gigabit Ethernet Q.

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Hi,

Regarding gigabit ethernet, I see that Alteon, 3COM and Netgear made a card
seemingly based on the same chipset. All but 3Com have copper support in
kernel 2.4.x (I'm not at all interested in < 2.4.x support). I also notice
that Alteon was sold to Nortel, who then sold the gigE division to 3COM, who
doesn't seem to reference the Alteon cards on their website - at least,
nothing I found. I found the 3C996-T and the 3C985B-SX cards, but the 996-T
is not referenced in the acenic.c driver source.

So, my questions are:

1. From where can one buy Alteon NICs these days, particularly the copper
variety? Or, have they gone the way of the dinosaur?

2. Is there kernel 2.4.x support somewhere for the 3COM's 3C996-T?

3. What is a recommended copper-based gigE card for Linux using kernel
2.4.x? The choice appears to be limited, but there must be one that stands
above the rest in terms of reliability, speed and ease of use.

Cheers!
Jon
