Just as a suggestion, be sure your hub (especially) and switch ports are
forced to half-duplex.  While hubs should never negotiate full-duplex,
I've seen it happen, and frankly I'm unaware of any successful full-duplex
connections.  It may actually work, but I've never seen it.  
Duplex mismatches can cause many errors, and impact performance
dramatically.  A very common symptom is failures under heavy network
load.  Very hard to diagnose.
