While I don't like to reply to myself, I've almost figured this one out.

I have another 3com device - a home wireless gateway (802.3 to 802.11b bridge)
- whose internal interface has a mac address close to the incorrect one I'm
getting for the .254 address. I'm guessing 3com has hardcoded the backend
interface of the wireless gateway with and ipaddress of .254. If I unplug the
gateway from the switch, everything works fine.

However, this doesn't explain why Linux is having a problem and Windows 2000
clients are not. Is there an explanation for this?

Thanks!
