I really don't know if this is what you want, but you could just upgrade the packages you need manually: # rpm -Uvh foo.7.0.rpm You don't even need to reboot, just restart the daemons. If it is a "crutial server" I would check for the latest RPMs for bind and wu-ftp at least and care about the dependences. As far as the message that welcomes you I don't where the RedHat version is stored, but you can check the script /etc/rc.d/rc.local for information.
