If you have a HomePNA card, use

insmod pcnet32 interface=rj45

to use the regular twisted pair port, otherwise, the default action will be to use the 1mb phone line rj11 interface

if you're using an AT-2450FTX (don't know about the other Allied Telesyn fiber cards), use

insmod pcnet32 interface=fiber

to switch the PHY address to the fiber port vs. the rj45 connector.
