Re: Aliasing Question

Okay, what is the output of:

# /sbin/ifconfig eth0:0
eth0:0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:04:44:1F:C3
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          Interrupt:10 Base address:0xe800

This should confirm the kernel has been configured, complied and booted
correctly.

I am running from a 2.2.x box with these tools:

# /sbin/ifconfig -V
net-tools 1.52
ifconfig 1.39 (1999-03-18)

However I think IP aliasing has been a feature for more than a couple of
years, heh.

I think I was wrong to think they needed to be 'up'ed, they appear to
track the master devices 'eth0' flags. However they are not visible in
a 'ifconfig -a' output until the IP address is set.

# /sbin/ifconfig eth0:0
eth0:0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:04:44:1F:C3
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          Interrupt:10 Base address:0xe800
# /sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 10.1.1.1
eth0:0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:04:44:1F:C3
          inet addr:10.1.1.1 Bcast:10.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          Interrupt:10 Base address:0xe800
