Hmmm, you forced full duplex and it now works properly...

That means that the other end was in forced-full-duplex mode all along.
That's a network configuration problem, not a driver problem.

To avoid this problem in the future (and you _will_ have this problem again
with forced-full-duplex) you should always leave autonegotiation enabled.
If you have hardware with broken autonegotiation, such as Cisco switches,
have them advertise only half duplex modes.  The very minor performance
difference from using half duplex mode will be more than repaid by having
configuration problems like this in the future.
