DHCP client for cable modem use

Hi,

My friends and I have cable modem service from two different
cable providers. They've been unable to get DHCP to work with their
RH 6.2 boxes. I'm about to setup a Linux firewall/maquerader at home and
I'm planning on setting up DHCP. My question is basically why are there
two clients for DHCP? Also is one better or more flexible than the other?
Also should I update pump to version 0.8.5 off of the rawhide archive?

This may be Red Hat specific but if we have two potential clients for
DHCP, why are the network scripts in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
hard-coded to use pump? (Don't get me wrong, I really like Red Hat.)

TIA,
Tuan
