Localhost in DNS

We resently had a discussion in our dk LUG (sslug.dk) about having
localhost in a nameserver. Nothing conclusive though.

Some meant localhost might aid a spammer to force mail not to be
returned, but rather get redirected to the host/postmaster.

Any reasons whatsoever for having localhost in DNS?
Put another way: What apps might be broken _not_ having localhost in
DNS?
