I am not a professional but as for linux you have a wide range of choices:
for probing and the sort you need to get portsentry which is available at
freshmeat.net. Then you need to set up an ipchains firewall. One other
really useful thing to do is to run the bastille script for hardening
linux on your machine. It is also available at freshmeat.
