timeout on network device

Hi,

I'm lately getting the following messages in my logs:

----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----
Aug 4 23:10:54 tux kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out
Aug 4 23:10:54 tux kernel: eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status 00 status 2000
Tx FIFO room 1516.
----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----8<----

which causes the connections on the named device to time out. eth0 is an 3com
3c509 NIC.
It seems that this is happening while the system load is quite high
(compiling something).

I'm having this problem in 2.4.0-test4 through 2.4.0-test6-pre2.

I hope someone has got an idea what this is about and how it can be fixed. ;)

CU Andre
