Telnet sessions disconnect under load

I have seen the following problem on my own "home-grown" Linux system
and also on RedHat 6.1 and Mandrake systems.

When traffic over a telnet session exceeds some magic level, the
session is disconnected. This usually seems to happen during a large
ls -l or somesuch that generates lots of output quickly but may also
happen if the total network traffic through the Linux box is very high.

Can anybody please explain what is happening and suggest a way toavoid
the problem.

Cheers and thanks,
Stephen Davies
