Thank you responders you. I will take your advice and check the various logs, smb.conf, inetd etc and report back. Unfortunately the monitor for my Linux box died on me last night and is now pining in a repair shop here in Berlin. When it comes back fixed or I get a new one I will begin again to unravel the mystery that is Samba on CLOS. At the moment I feel that the entries are correct in inetd since event viewer reports that nmbd is being started yet loops and is for that reason terminated. No computer is visible at all in the network neighbourhood of both win98 and CLOS and no, I have yet to attempt to connect using the UNC method from my win98 box, nor have I (oh stupid me) run a testparm. All this is to come.
