Thanks so far (re Samba and nmbd)

Thank you responders you. I will take your advice and check the various 
logs, smb.conf, inetd etc and report back. Unfortunately the monitor for my 
Linux box died on me last night and is now pining in a repair shop here in 
Berlin. When it comes back fixed or I get a new one I will begin again to 
unravel the mystery that is Samba on CLOS. At the moment I feel that the 
entries are correct in inetd since event viewer reports that nmbd is being 
started yet loops and is for that reason terminated. No computer is visible 
at all in the network neighbourhood of both win98 and CLOS and no, I have 
yet to attempt to connect using the UNC method from my win98 box, nor have I 
(oh stupid me) run a testparm. All this is to come.
