Yes, there are modems that hook up to ethernet.  They are not cheep, but
they are available.  They are a combination of a router, and ether dial
on demand, or dedicated connection.  They also make ISDN versions.  I
know Netgeer and Linksys make them.  I am not sure who else.  If you
need the exact name for them, and modle numbers, let me know, and I will
look them up on my next net shopping trip.
