routed problems

hello. im trying to get routed working...
what ive got is a network like:
host A ---- host B --- host C ---- host D ---- host E

host A and B talk RIP. A is not mine so i cant get to it, but i know it works. host B-E are mine. B _was_ a micom marathon, and is now a linux box, and since that change, RIP is broken. what i need is for B to tell A where E is.

quite simply, ive messed about with /etc/gateways plenty, and currently it reads:
net <E's network>/netmask gateway <E> metric 1 active

obviously, it doesnt work (or else i wouldnt be asking ;)
i get routed[4841]: route in unsupported address family (512), from 192.168.25.254 (af 2)
in my /var/log/messages (that IP adress is host A).

can someone PLEASE help...if this doesnt work ill have to switch back to the ancient micom marathon which, frankly, belongs in a museum.

thanks,
fred
