It would definitely be nice to resolve that. Why? Install / remove commands are stupidly powerful. For example you can use them to load the eeepc-laptop module in the background, and avoid multi-second boot delays on some laptops. softdeps should not aim to completely replace install commands. All softdeps need to do is replace the install commands that distros currently ship, which otherwise require special handling when building an initramfs. I don't see why we should encourage the "mock" or "fake" module pattern. Users can write shell scripts or aliases instead.
