Ok.  Jon, how would you like me to proceed?  You said you could update
the README yourself (in place of patch 1), patch 2 is an uncontested bug
fix (for make distclean), and you've approved patch 3 ($PATH).

If nothing else, I'd like to avoid resending patch 3 because it's about
200K :-).  Is it OK if I just post an update version of patch 4, to
address Mikes' point?

I can publish the full series on GitHub as well, if that helps.
