Not sure why I've only noticed this now, but all these patches seem to
say "This is a preparatory commit" -- I don't think "commit" is
applicable, and "This .. patch" is discouraged.

Maybe just change it to say "This is to prepare for the upcoming ..."
after the below paragraph?
