The overall approach makes total sense to me. I tried to go through the code, but it was a bit challenging. I wonder, if you can split it into smaller parts to simplify the review? Idk how easy is to split the core (maybe the area merging code can be separated?), but at least the optionally compiled debug code can be moved into separate patches.
