This doesn't sound very clear at the end. I think I recall that
userspace is responsible for maintaining queues on both devices, and
ensuring that buffers completed on the output are queued to the input?

Same as above. Probably could be clear that userspace is queueing the
captured buffers of the output to the input for processing on the next
frame.
