The use of "word" here is a little bit of confusing, the NV12 format as defined
by Microsoft at [1] is using unsigned char (uint8_t) and unsigned WORD (uint16_t)
to describe component/sample size.

Also, the use of NV12 in a format name that is not 8-bit is a bit confusing,
the 12 indicate the number of bits required for a single pixel, for the 10-bit
format NV12_10_3 16-bits is required for a single pixel at optimal resolution.

NV12 (4x2 pixels):
8 y * 8 bits + 2 uv * 16 bits = 96 bits for 8 pixels -> 12 bits / pixel

NV12_10_3 (6x2 pixels):
(12/3) * 32 bits + ((12/4)/3) * 64 bits = 192 bits for 12 pixels -> 16 bits / pixel

How would you describe the format NV15/NV20 added in [2], as they may not fully
abiding by the "padded as necessary to reach a multiple of 8 bits" if I
understand this description correctly?
(NV15 has already been added to uapi drm_fourcc.h)

NV15 (8x2 pixels):
16 y * 10 bits + 4 uv * 20 bits = 240 bits for 16 pixels -> 15 bits / pixel
