HVR3000 DVB-T and ubuntu 9.04

I can't get DVB-T to work with my HVR3000 using scan I just get tuning 
fail messages. dvbscan I get unable to query device message. how could I 
test to see if my UHF aerial is connected properly without getting up on 
our very inaccessible roof.
