Hi Stoth, As you know, vger has several ways to protect the mailing list against spam, and, considering the amount of spam we receive here and at LKML, they are quite effective. There are very low spam traffic there. I don't know what mechanisms they used there to solve this, but for sure they deny html posts. This is a recommended measure from security POV, since html emails can be used for several bad things including scam, especially when those emails are mirrored on some websites, since they can include some arbitrary code (asp/java/javascript) inside, that can do evil things for those who read such emails. I dunno if is there any way to disable html emails at gmail's web interface. In my case, when I use my gmail account, I always do it via an imap/smtp client, using the gmail server as a smtp smart relay. This way, the email will be sent as a pure text email as expected.
