$ grep PS1.*return /etc/bash.bashrc 
[ -z "$PS1" ] && return

Nothing bad.

I edited ~/.bash_aliases, but I don't think I have anything there
that would workaround this issue.  I'm puzzled.

No idea; it could be.  I don't have any bullseye to test it.
