I'm very sure that we never had a working RTC on the Q900/Q950. In fact, I believe that trying it crashed the system in 2.2. The kernel tried to use one of the existing RTC routines on that hardware when it wasn't the right thing to do. In particular it used the VIA bit-poking method that really old macs need and that wasn't a good thing. The caboose chip handles the RTC on these systems (and a few other things as well) and we just simply don't know how to use it.
