Specifying the target tools individually, as in make CC=clang LD=ld.lld AR=llvm-ar NM=llvm-nm STRIP=llvm-strip \ OBJCOPY=llvm-objcopy OBJDUMP=llvm-objdump READELF=llvm-readelf ... is a perfectly correct command that makes CROSS_COMPILE unnecessary. There is no reason to stop inferring --target for this case. The problem is NOT removing the LLVM=1 check but the wrong documentation. Let's write a precise document.
