Elantech touchpad only registering input/in-sync while middle-clicking

Elantech touchpad [Fujitsu H730] doesn't register any input unless
middle-click is constantly pressed

#### Full description of the problem/report:
I've discovered that the Elantech touchpad does not work unless
middle-click is constantly pressed.
However, as long as it is, multitouch, left-click, right-click etc,
all appear to work perfectly fine.

This is occuring on a Fujitsu Celsius H730, with the latest BIOS
update available.

Specifically, in /var/log/syslog I get the following message upon
middle-clicking:

Then, upon letting go:

Attempting to use the touchpad without holding down the middle-click
button yields these:

This bug was initially reported to Launchpad, with the following URL:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1371786

With some minor searching, it seems that bug #77391 (Kernel.org
bugzilla) seems relevant, although I'm not qualified to say to what
degree.

A workaround to get the touchpad to work has been to 'rmmod psmouse'
and then 'modprobe psmouse proto=exps' (or bare, if you'd like).
However, this makes the the trackpoint disappear from xinput.
