This is clearly evident in X, where the input class driver matching process fails to assign the "synaptics" driver as the "matchIsTouchpad" predicate fails. Even if the "synaptics" driver is directly assigned to the input device (/dev/input/event13 in this case) with Option "protocol" "event", the synaptics driver fails to communicate with the touchpad (see Xorg.0.log excerpt below).
