I'm a little nervous about sending this for stable as it's pretty large
and invasive.

Hence I'm going to queue it up for the next merge window.  If it all looks
smooth after that, you can send an email to the stable mailing list to
pick it up as a backport.

Applied to the togreg branch of iio.git and pushed out as testing.
