To be clear the kernel panic happens on both linux-hardened and linux.
linux-hardened changed their config file to debug sg, so after testing I
confirmed that linux does the same by rebuilding it with the same option. The
underlying issue is caused by the line from include/linux/scatterlist.h:

"BUG_ON(!virt_addr_valid(buf));"
