software raid faster than raw disk?

Hello,

I noticed very odd thing : sequential write speed to SATA-II disk (SAMSUNG SP2504C) is 12Mbyte/s, but writing to software RAID1 array that consists of only that same one disk (other is 'missing') I get speed of 20Mbytes/s!

I tested this on another box aswell - there I even got 30Mbytes/s for software raid and again only 12Mbyte/s on raw disk.

How can this be possible? I guess my disk has somehow "remapped sectors" so it really isn't "sequential" write. But then why is writing to software raid faster? I have tried with four SP2504C disks and they all share the same odd problem.

The same computer has other drives (SEAGATE ST3250620NS) aswell - they do not have that problem.

storage2:~# ./dm -a 0 -b 1M -s 1024M -y -p -o /dev/sdc4
12.22 MB/sec (1073741824 B / 01:23.828224)

storage2:~# ./dm -a 0 -b 1M -s 1024M -y -p -o /dev/md4
20.83 MB/sec (1073741824 B / 00:49.166025)

(dm is like dd but it will sync before timings)

/proc/mdstat:
md4 : active raid1 sdc4[0]
      240187712 blocks [2/1] [U_]

Note that write cache was off. If write cache was on, both timings (to sdc and md) were around 30Mbytes/s, that's why I was thinking about "remapped sectors".

kernel: custom compiled 2.6.21.1
(2.6.18-4-amd64 from Etch also had same problem)

I have attatched relevant information (dmesg, hdparm etc)
