With a Barracuda harddisk as hda, Linux 2.6.14 and 2.6.15 DON'T work, 2.6.11 WORKS

I searched the linux-ide mailing list and lkml, and i am surprised such a big problem was not reported. I'm sorry if i am sending this to the wrong list.

My southbridge is VT8237. I tried this with APIC enabled and disabled, it still doesn't work.

        hda is ST325082 (250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.8)
hdb is Philips CDD5301 Combo DVD/CD

hdc is Maxtor 6 L040J2 (40GB; all versions of Linux work if this is hda instead of hdc)
hdd is TEAC CD-540E (CD drive)

I also have a harddisk on SATA (with my Linux partition on it). I use libata to access it, but i don't use libata for anything else.

Just as Linux boots, it prints out
hda:irq probe failed
and then a lot of messages scroll by. There is a stack trace, but i can't the the beginning of it. The first element in the stack trace that i can see is

[something] request_irq+0x8a/0xc0

        After the stack trace:
handlers: ide_intr
Disabling IRQ #14
(other messages about hdc, hdd, etc.)

At this point the kernel seems to freeze, and i can't use pageup to see earlier messages. SysRq doesn't work either.

        I attached my .config.

I have a single processor, 1GHz Athlon, A7V600-X motherboard with KT600 northbridge. My kernel command line is root=/dev/sda5 ro reboot=w floppy=daring atkbd.softraw=0.

Attachment: .config
Description: Binary data
