I have just committed the fix:

It's just a commit as any other, you can backport it to your
distribution package to solve the licensing issue.

That being said, it is true that there has been no release of i2c-tools
for a while now, and that would seem to be a good idea. But I don't
have the time to do it immediately, so I'm adding it to my to-do list.
