I would suggest to introduce the platform driver in the first patch
of a multi-patch series. Also, the probe function should only be called
after detection, or in other words move the detection code (the first
call to dmi_check_system() and other code resulting in -ENODEV))
into the new i8k_init() function.

I would also suggest to use devm_add_action_or_reset() in i8k_init_procfs()
to trigger the call to i8k_exit_procfs(). This way you don't need the remove
function anymore, and the dummy prototype for i8k_exit_procfs() is not
needed anymore either. it would probably be best to do that in a separate
patch after the conversion to a platform driver.

It would also be desirable to move all static variables into a driver
private data structure if that is feasible. That could be done as
separate patch as well.

The conversion itself should not modify the behavior of existing
attributes. We can discuss functional changes, but those should
be done in separate patches.
